Radar Detector Rules to Check Before You Sell

Rules that affect radar detector sales: the federal commercial-vehicle restriction, confirmed state-level restrictions, and how to check your market.

This page collects the rules most relevant to sellers of receive-only radar detectors for private passenger vehicles. It is general information, not legal advice, and the list is not exhaustive. Rules change, and responsibility for checking them sits with the seller and the buyer.

Federal scope in the United States

United States federal transport regulation restricts radar detector use in commercial motor vehicles, and drivers may not operate a commercial motor vehicle equipped with one. This is why every product and listing on this site states the private-passenger-vehicle scope. Resellers should carry the same statement in their own listings.

Confirmed state-level restrictions

Two state-level restrictions are confirmed from primary sources in our research notes:

  • Virginia restricts both use and sale of radar detection equipment in the state. Sellers should treat Virginia as a do-not-ship or advise-before-sale jurisdiction.
  • New York restricts use in vehicles above a GVWR threshold and in commercial vehicles under its vehicle and traffic law.

Other jurisdictions are reported to restrict use or sale; we do not state them as confirmed until the primary source is on file. The absence of a jurisdiction from this page is not a statement that use is unrestricted there.

Devices that transmit

Devices that transmit signals, or that interfere with radio communications, are prohibited under United States federal law and are banned from major marketplaces. This site sells receive-only units only. Listings should avoid any wording that could be read as a claim of interference or avoidance; describe what the unit receives and alerts, and stop there.

Windshield and mounting rules

Some jurisdictions restrict objects on the windshield or items that obstruct the driver's view. Because mounting position is a product decision, sellers should advise customers to confirm local rules for the mounting position they plan to use.

How to check your market

  • Read the current statute or regulation for each state or country you sell into, not a summary.
  • Ask a licensed attorney for a written opinion where a restriction is unclear.
  • Check marketplace policy pages separately; platform rules can be stricter than law.
  • Record the date you checked each source, and re-check each season.

The desk requests a ship-to location with every quote so that confirmed restrictions can be checked before an order. We do not provide legal opinions.
